Cycling Triumph: 125 miles for Alzheimers
On August 5th, 2023, a group comprising Matt, James along with their friends Luke and Greg embarked on a journey, cycling 125 miles from Derby to Oxford. Their mission: to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. And what a triumph it turned out to be – their initial goal of £500 was not just met, but exceeded as they rallied support and collected an impressive £1,195!
The ride…
Undoubtedly, the cycle wasn’t without its trials. Commencing their ride later than planned due to adverse weather conditions, they confronted the relentless Storm Antoni. Within moments of setting off, the downpour left them and their gear soaked.
At the 12-mile mark, Greg’s determination pushed him a tad too far, resulting in a snapped gearing system that regrettably marked the end of his cycling leg. Nevertheless, he joined the ranks of the support team, ensuring the safety and well-being of the cyclists throughout the journey.
As the weather continued to deteriorate, road conditions grew increasingly treacherous. James took a fall due to slippery surfaces, but fortunately emerged unscathed and undeterred by the setback. His challenges, however, didn’t conclude there – halfway through, he faced not one, but two punctures. Thanks to the steadfast assistance of the support crew, his bicycle was swiftly repaired, enabling the team to press forward towards Oxford.
Persistently battling the relentless rain and confronting unforeseen steep ascents, the determined group concluded their ride at 7:30 pm in Oxford, having travelled 125 miles over a grueling 8 hours and 30 minutes. The cyclists wish to give Phil and Molly a big shout out for their support along the way!
