The Granary at South Staffordshire College is complete!.

The landmark building, whilst not listed, had significant architectural merit and required a sensitive design approach to respect its historic stature.

It has now been restored and repurposed to provide 1000m2 of learning space housing a construction vehicle simulator, mechatronics lab and a small production line.

It was an interesting project to work one due to the mix of renovation of the historical buildings and the housing of the high-tech farming and manufacturing simulators.

From a detailed structural inspection allowing the design to develop to retain as much of the original building as possible, whilst providing a modern educational environment to achieve the college’s aspirational requirements; the design incorporated new foundations with cantilevered ground beams to avoid extensive underpinning of the existing structure, the introduction of a new steel frame forming mezzanine floor & restraint to existing masonry and remedial details to retain the existing structure where practical.

The restoration of original features required sympathetic engineering to provide the necessary structural support yet retain the historic significance of the building.
