Jackson Purdue Lever is pleased to have played a key role as Civil and Structural Engineers in the transformation of the historic Friar Gate Goods Yard in Derby, where the first residents are now moving into Wavensmere Homes’ landmark £80 million regeneration project.
Engineering a Complex Regeneration
Working closely with Wavensmere Homes and the wider design team, Jackson Purdue Lever has delivered civil and structural engineering solutions across the 11.5-acre brownfield site. The scheme combines the restoration of significant listed buildings. Construction of 276 new homes, requiring careful coordination between heritage conservation and modern infrastructure.
Restoring Historic Buildings
Alongside the new-build development, the project includes the sensitive restoration of the Grade II listed Bonded Warehouse and Engine House.
Jackson Purdue Lever has developed structural engineering solutions that preserve the buildings’ historic fabric while supporting their future use.
As a result, the restored buildings will provide more than 110,000 sq ft of flexible commercial space, including offices, health and fitness facilities, and hospitality uses.
Creating a Sustainable Community
In addition to preserving the site’s heritage, the development incorporates sustainable features that improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Every new home achieves an EPC A rating through the use of air source heat pumps, solar PV panels and EV charging points.
Meanwhile, the project introduces extensive public spaces and landscaped areas to create an attractive environment for residents and visitors.
Furthermore, improved pedestrian, cycle and highway connections will strengthen links between the development and Derby city centre.
Looking Ahead
Now that the first homes are occupied, the Friar Gate Goods Yard redevelopment marks a significant milestone in the regeneration of one of Derby’s most prominent historic locations.
